What if the world was already saved and the actions that we all take today help to make that a reality in the future? What if the solutions were already available and all we needed to do was implement them? What if- The world is already saved, I’m just helping.
You may ask, “Is the world worth saving?” What a question!
I was a professional landscaper in San Francisco for four years. Landscaping is a funny job. It forces people working together to become close. You spend a lot of time with each other in gardens and in the truck while driving from site to site.
At one of the landscape companies, I was sharing some thoughts I had about an environmental issue with my coworker who at the time had two children under the age of six. I am not sure what we were talking about specifically but all of a sudden he looked at me and practically shouted, “I know that things are a problem! But what can I do about it?”
It was his deep sense of powerlessness that really struck me after the encounter. He loves his kids. He wants to give them their best chance for their best life, which includes a livable planet. He would take action if he knew what to do and he is not alone. I think that there are thousands and even millions of humans who want to take action but don’t feel clear about what that means.
Action is not enough. Beliefs and mindset play a huge role as well. I have met many activists, change makers and passionate people fighting for causes, some who take radical actions to support their causes and simultaneously do not believe that humans should persist as a species or that it’s even possible for us to make it through our current climate crisis. From my perspective of how the Universe works, that is not a productive mindset.

I believe that humans need to believe that we are worthy of these solutions. It also takes the pressure off us having to create and find solutions to these problems. We need to focus on solutions because mindset is everything. I have trained myself to focus on solutions, so I get more of them. I am also fluent in plant, dirt and other Earth languages- so let me be a bridge and help us all meet in the middle. As a baseline, keep this in mind: Nature has the solutions.
I’ve spent a lot of time with the Earth over the last fifteen years. I’ve observed the outrageous resilience and brilliance of Nature as superior to any form of technology ever created by a human being. Sorry, but it’s true. It’s important that we (humans) first understand that Mother Nature knows best and that we humans have never had better ideas or designs than the ones she created. In other words, I do not think that technology will save the world. I think the world will save the world.
What does that mean? Nature is brilliantly designed which includes a forgiveness policy, several in fact. Even though humans have perpetuated destructive technologies and systems, Nature is ready to forgive and forget and get back to thriving. Some solutions are already known. For example, solar energy is a wildly abundant resource that leaves our current energy systems in the dust in terms of use and production. Other solutions exist as well: solar roadways, wind power, various algae projects, biodiesel solutions for energy, etc.
